There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.”

Nelson Mandela

Our current approach to divorce and family separation causes harm in so many ways. Its one of the leading contributors to Adverse Childhood Experiences, with all their harmful, lifetime consequences.

Two Wishes aims to remove the stigma of divorce and family separation and to change current systems that incentivise harm to children, and even weaponise children.

Forget the idea that “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”! In her groundbreaking book, award-winning journalist Donna Jackson Nakazawa shows the link between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), such as childhood exposure to parents’ divorce or separation, and adult illnesses such as heart disease, auto-immune disease, and cancer. Childhood Disrupted also explains how to cope with these emotional traumas and even heal from them.

As the book’s subtitle suggests, “your biography becomes your biology”; the emotional trauma we suffer as children not only shapes our emotional lives as adults, it also affects our physical health, longevity, and overall wellbeing. Scientists now know on a bio-chemical level exactly how parents’ chronic fights, divorce, death in the family, being bullied, or growing up with a hypercritical, alcoholic or mentally ill parent can leave permanent, physical “fingerprints” on our brains.

Two Wishes is campaigning to change our focus on families, and our approach to family separation, from harmful, too-late legal interventions to much earlier, health-focused solutions.
